Paul Hague's World Travels

Between 1993 and 2002 Paul Hague explored the world, both as an independent
traveller and also as “VSO” volunteer working for a selection of charities.
Fortunately his adventures, his encounters (both humorous and alarming)
and his insights have been recorded in a rich collection of emails he sent to his
friends, and in Paul's travel journals.
The writings are arranged in two groups below, and they introduce the reader
to some wonderful characters, give glimpses into life in some exotic foreign parts,
and allow the reader to travel with, and get to know the inimitable Paul Hague.

The Backpacking Journeys 1993 - 2002

Between 1993s and early 2003 Paul spent a month each year travelling alone
in various countries.
Here you can read his accounts of these six adventures
and meet some of the people he encountered.

The VSO Placements 1999 - 2020

For some years following retirement from his life's work as Youth and Community
Worker for the Culm Valley, Devon Paul Hague looked to indulge his passions
for adventurous travel and for engaging with people in his positive and helpful way.
Offering his services to Voluntary Service Overseas in Africa and in
Papua New Guinea provided the opportunity for just such a mixture.
His occasional entertaining emails to his more sedentary friends back in England
provide the material for this website. We have persuaded Paul to make these
fascinating emails available here for anyone interested in VSO, adventure,
cultural diversity and learning what the hell Paul was getting up to during those
years that he was not available to join our social gatherings,
where he oft was toasted. “Here's to Paul!”
